Welcome to Lanai and Molokai

Ancient fishponds and Heiaus (sacred sites) add to the charm that is Molokai making it one of the last refuges in the Hawaiian island chain to still be considered "old Hawaii". If you are looking for fancy resorts and bustling nightlife, you better look elsewhere.

If you are looking for a truly Hawaiian backroads escape, then you might just love it here.  Although Molokai is but a mere 20 minutes flight from Oahu, the island has a feeling of utter remoteness and has but a mere 6-7,000 population. Molokai island residents have always clung to their seclusion, hence leaving the island less attractive to visitors than the more popular islands of Oahu and Maui.

This reputation was probably attributed to the fact that Molokai was once known as the forbidden island when in the early 1800's Father Damien established the island as a leper colony. It was here that the ostracized victims of Hansen's Disease were taken to keep from spreading the disease to others. Separated from their loved ones, it was here they existed in this tropical yet lonely sanctuary for the remainder of their lives.

Nowadays, thanks to modern medicine there are but a few victims of the disease around and they are free to come and go as they please. The island is no longer off limits and visitors are welcome though in a rather quaint and rustic fashion. Traffic is sparse, roads are mostly unpaved and amenities run scarce yet there are some very nice places to stay and what you seek is true seclusion and old Hawaiian charm, you will find it here. Lanai is even more remote and limited, however, this privately owned island features it's
very own resort and was not too long ago the chosen wedding site of Microsoft's own Bill
Gates.
