| A Children's Home was established by The Salvation Army to provide orphaned and needy children with shelter, spiritual assistance and education. In 1922, the Wai'oli Tea Room was built with a bakery facility for the education of the girls at the home. Here they were to learn "cooking, baking and the arts of gracious living." Originally the bakery was the focal point of Wai'oli; with bakery items delivered into Honolulu. A tea room was the natural accompaniment to a bakery and soon began serving high tea, then lunches, Sunday brunches and even dinners, all featuring a dazzling array of desserts and pastries. As the need for a Children's Home dwindled due to changes in the social services needed in Honolulu, staffing became a problem. In the 1980's the Friends of Wai'oli organized to help the tea room by preparing craft articles for sale and assisting with the preparation of food and its serving. Today, the Wai'oli Tea Room is on the State Register of Historic Places and is one of the oldest and most loved dining places in Hawaii. Its elegant charm makes it the perfect setting for an enchanting wedding reception. |
